Programme Structure
This pathway is taught over two years, three semesters per year. Each unit is 20 credits at Level 3. The full pathway leads to 120 credits at level 3. Units are individually assessed using a variety of assessment methods.
To access the programme, potential students must be in a position to practice in an extended surgical team, or working towards this in collaboration with their employers. There should be Consultant Surgeon supervision available and access to patients in order to plan and assist in surgery, undertake delegated surgical interventions and follow up patients.
Course Aim & Objectives
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- See client group have direct access to extended surgical team without prior referral
- Provide holistic assessment encompassing skills traditionally in the domain of other health care professionals
- Have responsibility for admission, care and discharge of the patient where appropriate
- Have responsibility for undertaking prescribed surgical interventions and delegated perioperative care of patients
- Provide counselling, health education and health monitoring of patients
- Have advanced decision making skills based on a knowledge base of sufficient breadth and depth
- Be able to plan with the patient a holistic programme of care and treatment acceptable to the patient
- Work in collaboration with other health care professionals
- Meet criteria for practice developed in Department of Health (2006) - Curriculum Framework for the Surgical Care Practitioner
Course Content
Year 1
- October: Clinical Assessment and Examination Skills for Advanced Practice.
- January: (40 Credits) Compulsory Double Module
- April: Foundations for Advanced Practice (20 credits) Compulsory Module
Year 2
- October: Surgical Care Practitioner Core / Specialty (20 credits)
- January: Medicines Management or Independent – Supplementary Prescribing Examination
- April: Short Dissertation – 5000 word dissertation
