3M AfPP Academy gets underway with the potential to deliver even more

A team of ten theatre nurses and ODPs from cities as far reaching as Aberdeen to Bath came together for two days of workshops to kick start the 2010 3M AfPP Academy.

The delegates were specially selected by AfPP for this unique personal and professional development programme, forming a group with diverse responsibilities and levels of experience from NHS and private hospitals.

The Academy comprises a series of practical workshops run by independent consultants offering top class training on personal effectiveness, communication and leadership skills. In addition, a course focusing on legal issues clearly sets out the laws associated with duty of care and gives advice on documenting patient consent, accurate record keeping and presenting evidence.

AfPP President, Diane Gilmour, joined one of the workshops to meet this year’s group. "The Academy has the potential to make a real impact on the confidence and capability of practitioners at all levels," she said. "With increased confidence and motivation individuals can impact the effectiveness of their team and ultimately enhance patient care," she added.

Highlighting some previous Academy successes, Diane commended Kay Kneeshaw of Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, who attended the Academy in 2009. Having previously lacked confidence in herself and in formal presenting, Kay has spoken at akey regional event. She is now the Essence of Care Lead for Day Surgery, and has mentored a Health Care Assistant. "Kay is a great testament to the Academy’s success, shaping the service she and colleagues provide to ensure the best levels of care," said Diane.

The 2010 Academy programme, now in its sixth year, has been extended to include anew workshop entitled ‘Selling Your Idea’. The training will give practitioners a cleaunderstanding of how to turn an idea into a formal proposal, present the idea and engage people to obtain buy-in. "We instigated the support of previous Academy delegates to shape this workshop in line with the Academy aims," said Julie Owen, Communications Manager at 3M. "Persuading others to appreciate your point of viewand take action can be a real challenge in the workplace with barriers to accepting change and resource limitations. We hope this workshop will enable practitioners to negotiate the outcomes they desire, both professionally and personally," she added.

From the 2010 team, Ann Conquest, Recovery Sister at Bedford Hospital NHS Trustwas particularly impressed with the legal training. "The presentation and content wasspot on with a really engaging speaker and lots of relevant information to take back tthe workplace," she commented. "The Documentation and Report Writing elements gave very useful guidance which I have since applied to writing my patients notes.

"It was obvious from the first Academy workshops that as well as the valuable training, one of the major benefits of this programme is the strong peer support group and team dynamics it creates," she added. For more information about the 3M AfPP Academy visit the website: www.3m.co.uk/afpp
