Released on - 17/01/2018
AfPP Vice President Tracey Williams and AfPP Consultant Lisa Tierney are set to return to Ethiopia this month to promote and train perioperative staff and advance safer surgery in the country.
Tracey and Past President AfPP Mona Guckian Fisher, in collaboration with the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) and the Royal College of Surgeons (RCoS,) first visited the Black Lion Hospital, Ethiopia, in June and September 2017.
The team facilitated three days of multidisciplinary training, which included workshops, lectures and group activities, designed to encourage safer practice across the whole perioperative team. The project is fully supported by the Ethiopian Government and has engaged hospital directors from the country.
The team's next visit will take place later this month and involves intensive training, including a day to "train the trainer" for staff in Ethiopia involved in rolling out the programme across the country. To further this, AfPP has donated copies of its Standards and Guidance, whilst Tracey is personally donating a teaching package that will help those who would usually go into operating theatres with no prior training.
