Surgical Care Practitioner Core Syllabus | First Edition

The Surgical Care Practitioner Core Syllabus (first edition) provides an academic tool for those wishing to develop the surgical care practitioner role. It is to be used in conjunction with the Surgical Care Practitioner Curriculum Framework published by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) in 2014. This core syllabus provides a recognised, standardised and transferable education and training programme. The fundamental aim is to promote the wellbeing of the perioperative patient.

This core syllabus provides the essential detail to underpin the curriculum framework for SCPs. It is composed of common elements necessary to the role of the surgical care practitioner that form the transferable basic knowledge base. The RCSEng Surgical Care Practitioner Curriculum Framework contains a list of the specialist knowledge and skills that relate to the surgical specialties of trauma, orthopaedic, vascular, cardio thoracic, gynaecology, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, neurosurgery, maxilla facial, paediatric and general surgery. Otorhinolaryngology is also included. The core syllabus should be completed in conjunction with the curriculum framework.

The core syllabus is designed as a flexible tool to enable the trainee SCP, mentor and clinical supervisor to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities that will be required by each practitioner in order to perform safely and effectively in an SCP role.

This document is the first to provide a systematic framework that enables the practitioner’s prior knowledge and experience to be identified. This ensures that learning needs applicable to each individual practitioner are identified in order to attain the theoretical understanding and competence in order to perform the surgical care practitioner role. This AfPP first edition also provides a framework for continuing skills assessment to promote professional development and an up-to-date knowledge base for the SCP.
