The Association of Anaesthetists New Guidelines for Dementia Care 2018

The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) are due to release new guidelines on perioperative care for people with Dementia and Cognitive Impairment (2018).

These guidelines will provide information, recommendations and support for perioperative Physicians and Allied Health Professionals who currently provide emergency and elective surgical care for people with Dementia and Cognitive Impairment. This is in recognition of an aging population presenting a higher incidence of Dementia. The guidelines will support health care professionals in perioperative practice to provide a multidisciplinary approach in understanding Dementia pathophysiology and the specific difficulties faced when anaesthetising these patients. These guidelines should be read in conjunction with the 2014 AAGBI guideline Perioperative Care of the Elderly.
