Medical Liability Insurance

One of the many membership benefits of AfPP is the option to take out medical malpractice insurance. We have changed insurance providers with effect from 1 April 2011, when the policy will be underwritten by Lloyd’s of London. There is additional access to a 24/7 medico-legal advice help line provided by Kennedy’s – one of the best legal defense firms in the UK.

Professional liability insurance cover up to £3m is recommended by the NMC and the General Medical Council. It is also suggested to candidates working for agencies and is especially important where employers do not accept vicarious liability.

  • We have added extra cover by introducing £3m cover for just £78 pa or £6.50 pcm.
  • £1m insurance cover is going down to £57.72 pa or £4.81 pcm.
  • £0.5m cover will be £37.44 pa or £3.12 pcm.

AfPP will continue to offer £0.5m cover in the short-term, but will be phasing this out as it will increasingly not provide sufficient cover for some claims.

The premium may be added to your membership subscription and paid monthly by direct debit. This means your membership and medical insurance cover can start from just £7.62* per month. Policies will run from April to April and this may mean that it will be calculated pro rata if you choose to pay the premium in one lump sum. You can start a policy at any point in the year irrespective of your membership renewal date.

We would like to advise our members and any non-members who are members of RCN, that the AfPP PII offers comprehensive Medical Professional Liability Insurance cover. The RCN Indemnity is at the discretion of the RCN Council, it is not insurance. Our scheme however is an insurance contract backed by Lloyd’s of London, which has a financial security rating of ‘A` (Excellent) from AM Best, ‘A+` (Strong) from Standard & Poors and ‘A+’ (Strong) from Fitch Ratings the independent financial analysts.

To apply for cover, please download and read the statutory documents describing the cover below. Then complete and return the Proposal Form.

Please note that all insurance premiums will be pro rata to April of the following year.  Please DO NOT send in any payment with your proposal form.  We will either add the premium to an existing direct debit plan or contact you once your insurance application has been accepted to request a payment by credit/ debit card or cheque

You cannot join the indemnity insurance scheme online.
