Who Can Apply?
AfPP Professional Medical Liability Insurance is a Member Only Scheme.
The fee is in addition to your AfPP membership fee and you must maintain AfPP membership to remain covered.
As a condition of your professional registration, you must self-declare that you have an indemnity arrangement in place when you practice. Each practitioner is responsible for making sure they have the appropriate cover for their role and scope of practice. The cover in place should be relevant to the risks involved in your practice and be sufficient if a claim is successfully made against you.
If you are employed by the NHS, you will have a vicarious liability arrangement. The NHS insures its employees for work carried out on its behalf. If you work for the NHS via an agency, you will need to check that you have adequate cover in place. You may also require additional cover if you perform extended roles. The AfPP Medical Liability Insurance policy has been created specifically for practitioners working in and around operating theatres providing perioperative services defined as pre-operative anaesthetic care, intra-operative care and post-operative care.
Why Do I Need Insurance?
As part of your registration with the HCPC or NMC, all registered practitioners and nurses are required to have appropriate insurance.

Professional medical liability insurance protects you against allegations of malpractice. Your employer may provide cover for you, but it may not cover all circumstances. It’s important that you check the level of cover afforded by your employers’ scheme. With your own individual protection, you will benefit from your own representation if required.
Indemnity Limits and Premiums
1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025
The overall annual aggregate limit of liability in respect of the members of the Association for Perioperative Practice (the insured) is limited to a maximum blanket limit of liability of £9,000,000.00 including costs and expenses.
Insurance prices include an Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) of 12% and a non-refundable AfPP administration fee of £32.05.
- £1 million cover = £136.21
- £3 million cover = £168.85
- £3 million+ cover = £303.37
New Applications and Payment
New applications can be made part way through the year and will be charged on a pro-rata basis. Payment is required in full by Credit/Debit card.
Please be aware that AfPP cannot give you any advice or recommendation as to whether the Professional Indemnity Insurance offered through our scheme master policy is the correct cover for you. We can only assist with the administration by liaising with underwriters on your behalf. It is for you to decide if the cover through our scheme meets your needs and circumstances by reading all the available documents below and then applying for cover by completing a renewal application online, where on completion and acceptance by underwriters cover with be confirmed to you.
The cover provided via AfPP for subscribing members has been sourced from a single product provider, underwritten by The Medical Professional Liability Company Limited (“The MPLC”). It offers comprehensive Medical Professional Liability Insurance cover and is an insurance contract backed by Lloyd’s of London. The MPLC is an underwriting intermediary licensed in Gibraltar by the Financial Services Commission, under licence number FSC00659B. The MPLC’s insurances underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s. The Master Policy cover runs yearly from the 1 April to 31 March.
