Medical Professional Liability Insurance
We will not be issuing NEW insurance policies as from 1st March to 31st March 2014 for this current insurance schedule year . Any new policies applied for during March cannot start before the 1st April 2015 (onwards), which is the new insurance policy year.
INDEMNITY INSURANCE RENEWAL: Details of Insurance renewal procedures will be sent out to all members who have indemnity insurance through AfPP during the first week of March, forms will need to be returned to AfPP no later than the end of March.
From July 2014, all registered practitioners and nurses are required, as part of their registration with the HCPC or NMC, to have appropriate insurance or indemnity in place.
AfPP offers its members medical liability insurance.
One of the many membership benefits of AfPP is the option to apply for medical malpractice insurance. This policy is available to AfPP members only and has been sourced specifically for Theatre practitioners.
You can either pay for your insurance separately or add it to to your membership subscription and pay monthly by direct debit - with membership and medical insurance cover starting from only £12.30* per month. (*cost is based on monthly fee for non-registered membership & £1m insurance cover.)

WHY DO I NEED IT?
Professional liability insurance protects you against allegations of malpractice. Your employer may provide cover for you, but it may not cover you in all cases, so please check with them as to the indemnity cover afforded by their scheme. If you have your own individual protection, you will have the benefit of your own representation, when needed.
Please note that AfPP's Medical Liability Insurance does not offer cover for those practitioners working in Midwifery or obstetrics, although cover can be considered for other aspects of working practice if this is not your sole job role.

Please be aware that AfPP cannot give you any advice or recommendation as to whether the professional indemnity insurance offered through our scheme master policy is the correct cover for you. We can only assist with the adminisatration by liaising with underwriters on your behalf. It is for you to decide if the cover through our scheme meets your needs and circumstances by reading all the available documents.
The cover provided via AfPP for subscribing members has been sourced from a single product provider, underwritten by The Medical Professional Liability Company Limited ("The MPLC"). It offers comprehensive Medical Professional Liability Insurance cover and is an insurance contract backed by Lloyd’s of London, which has a financial security rating of ‘A+’ (Strong) from Standard & Poors and ‘AA-’ (Very Strong) from Fitch Ratings the independent financial analysts. The MPLC is an underwriting intermediary licensed in Gibraltar by the Financial Services Commission, under licence number FSC00659B. The MPLC's insurances underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd's.
Policies run yearly from 1st April to 31st March. You can apply and be considered for cover under the scheme at any point in the year irrespective of your membership renewal date and the policy premiums will be calculated pro-rata to the end of March the following year.
RCN Members - We would like to notify our members and any non-members who are members of RCN, that the RCN Scheme is not a policy of 'insurance' but rather a discretionary contractual indemnity. As of the 1st July 2014 the RCN Indemnity scheme no longer covers their members who are working for the NHS or private sector under a contract of employment.
