Speakers – Mo Iqbal & Mr Irshad Shaikh

This session provides an overview of robotic surgery, focusing on robotic colorectal surgery and innovations at NNUH. Led by Mo Iqbal and featuring Irshad Shaikh who’s a consultant colorectal surgeon at NNUH, the session covers three main learning objectives: understanding robotic surgery in general, exploring robotic colorectal surgery techniques, and discussing recent innovations in robotic surgery. This session will also share insights into the advancements and successful outcomes of robotic colorectal procedures.

11:00 - 12:00 - Session 2: Development of an Oesophagogastric Robotic Service

Speaker – Nicholas Penney

This session will discuss the introduction of a new robotic oesophagogastric service at NNUH. The talk will cover 1) How the new service was introduced, 2) The challenges faced and lessons learnt, 3) A case example from the first Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (RAMIO), 4) Plans for the future.

This session will cover the current landscape of soft tissue surgical robotics globally and in the UK. The challenges of adoption of robotics into mainstream practice. Consider some of the areas of ongoing research in robotics and how they may impact surgical care in the future.

Speakers – Siew-Ling Harrison and Thomas Maynard

Anaesthetic Considerations with regards to Robotic Surgery, with specific focus on the ergonomics of the room and the positioning of the patient. We will discuss nuances of the anaesthetic for different types of robotic surgery and the rationale behind it. Lastly, we will talk through potential emergency scenarios that may arise during robotic surgery, how we can best plan for this and manage it.

Sharing a world-first Versius combined pelvic case, Mr Heman Joshi will demonstrate the future of safe, accessible & sustainable robotic surgery. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1.Understand how Versius robotic surgery enhances patient safety, team communication and perioperative efficiency in colorectal procedures 2. Explore the structured training pathway for the theatre teams (VR, dry lab, preceptored cases) and the role of clinical registries in driving surgical excellence 3. Appreciate the innovative design that facilitate the seamless theatre integration without compromising anaesthetic or surgical workflows.
