Written by Susan Preston

The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) is proud to celebrate the 100th birthday of Professor Harold Ellis CBE by publishing The Professor Ellis Collection, a specially curated series of articles available free to all for 1 month only.

Professor Ellis, who celebrates his centenary this month, is an integral part of the DNA of AfPP’s official journal, the Journal of Perioperative Practice – an international, peer reviewed publication with a multidisciplinary ethos across all aspects of perioperative care. For more than 2 decades, he has been the Journal’s most cherished contributor, captivating readers with his storytelling, scholarship and deep commitment to perioperative practice.

To mark this exceptional milestone, AfPP, in partnership with Sage Publications, has brought together ten articles, one representing each decade of Professor Ellis’ life, celebrating a century of dedication to surgery, education and perioperative care.

Alex Duke, Chief Executive Officer of AfPP, the UK’s leading organisation dedicated to progressing safer surgery, said: “Professor Harold Ellis has had an immeasurable impact on surgery, medical education and perioperative practice. His contributions to the Journal of Perioperative Practice have informed, inspired and entertained our members for many years. We are honoured to celebrate his 100th birthday by making this special collection freely available to all.”

Born in January 1926, Professor Ellis qualified as a doctor from the University of Oxford in July 1948, the same month the NHS was founded. He went on to become one of the most influential British surgeons of the past 50 years, serving as Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the University of London and later as Professor in the Department of Anatomy & Human Sciences at King’s College London.

Renowned for his inspirational teaching and as the author of Clinical Anatomy, now in its fourteenth edition, Professor Ellis has held senior roles across the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Association of Surgical Oncology. His legacy is further reflected in prestigious surgical prizes that bear his name.

The Professor Ellis Collection will be available for one month only and can be accessed here:
