Human Factors SIG Lead. SIG Support: Nikki Jones-Ball

Human Factors are a major contributor to errors in the operating theatre, communication, situational awareness, teamwork and decision-making are key in playing a significant role in patient outcomes. Providing standardised training and education, including the use of simulation further improves patient safety and efficiency of surgery.

This forum will give you as AfPP members a platform to discuss and engage with like-minded practitioners on current practice issues around the application of human factors in improving patient safety.

More about the SIG Lead

I am an Associate Lecturer and Clinical Skills Tutor in Simulation at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Derby, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate students across Nursing and Operating Department Practice programmes. I originally qualified as an Operating Department Practitioner and gained experience across a wide range of perioperative specialties. Alongside my clinical work, I completed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Biological Psychology and Health Psychology, which deepened my interest in human behaviour and performance.

After contributing to research in psychology, I undertook advanced training as an Anaesthetic Associate and went on to practise full‑time in that role for 17 years. During this period, I developed a strong passion for Human Factors, completing specialist training and becoming a Human Factors champion within clinical practice.

Following early retirement from clinical work, I transitioned into full‑time higher education, where I continue to combine my interests in simulation, psychology, and safer perioperative practice. I am a committed advocate for Human Factors and proud to contribute to the AfPP community in promoting high‑quality, safe, and person‑centred care for both staff and patients.

SIG Support: Nikki Jones-Ball

I am an experienced Operating Department Practitioner with over 20 years of clinical experience across different perioperative settings within the NHS. I am currently working as a Senior Lecturer in Operating Department Practice at the University of Derby and as Programme Lead for the Certificate of Continuing Professional Development (CCPD) course in Anaesthetics, and I have FHEA status. I continue to work occasional clinical shifts, as this helps me to stay grounded and maintain an appreciation of real-world dynamics.

Human factors are important in all areas of perioperative practice, and I believe they should be embedded in teaching curricula and simulation training to promote best practice and support patient safety. I also have a keen interest in simulation-based learning, staff health and wellbeing and how we can use AI mentoring and digital tools to support healthcare education.

I am excited to be involved with the AfPP and to explore how human factors influence performance, safety and wellbeing, particularly in the context of perioperative practice
