Student and Early Careers SIG

SIG Lead: Kirsty Pierce. Supports: Brandon Wasmuth, Rebecca May and Faye Lowry

Welcome to the Student and Early Careers (SEC) Specialist Interest Group (SIG) dedicated to those working towards a career in perioperative care through a college, university or an apprenticeship scheme.

This SEC Specialist Interest Group aims to support all students through their apprenticeship or degree pathway into a career in perioperative practice, offering members the opportunity to seek advice, discuss aspects of clinical practice, provide support in early careers and act as a sounding board through the student forum network.

A couple of years ago I landed a job as an Ambulance Care Assistant (ACA), whilst in this position I decided I wanted a career as a paramedic and  decided to return to education, after some in depth research I enrolled on an access course shortly after this, I decided  on a career as an Operating Department Practitioner. I am currently studying BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice at university.

Along side this I have currently just volunteered with the Student and early Careers (SEC) Specialist Interest Group (SIG) at the AFPP, this will enable me to help others who are aspiring to work as an ODP or in Operating theatres and require educational resources and support. I am still very early in my journey, but who knows where it will take me next I have already come so far, I am focused on helping everyone and anyone I can with their career aspirations.

SIG Support: Rebecca May

I’m a third‑year Apprentice ODP Student in Exeter with a real passion for mental health, wellbeing, and supporting others. After completing my Mental Health First Aider training, I’ve become increasingly committed to creating safe, supportive spaces for students and early‑career practitioners.

My involvement with the AfPP regional team, along with the opportunity to contribute to a wellbeing webinar, has strengthened my desire to help others navigate the challenges of ODP training. I know first‑hand how daunting the journey can be, and I want to help make it feel more connected and less overwhelming.

Through this SIG, I hope to build a stronger sense of community by improving communication, raising awareness, and developing meaningful resources, such as webinars and journal articles, that encourage growth, confidence, and well-being.

I am a Senior Lecturer in Perioperative Studies at Edge Hill University. I qualified as an Operating Department Practitioner in 2011 and have extensive clinical experience across adult and paediatric settings, specialising in anaesthetics and post‑anaesthetic care. My career pathway includes progression to Head of Resuscitation, demonstrating the leadership and advancement opportunities available within the ODP profession.

I am passionate about education, leadership, and lifelong learning, and am committed to supporting and inspiring learners across both higher education and clinical practice. My work focuses on developing confident, compassionate practitioners equipped to deliver safe, high‑quality perioperative care
