The Robotics Symposium on 11th June welcomed experts from across the region.

In partnership with Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital the AfPP Robotics Symposium – Advancing Surgical Innovation: The Future of Robotics in Healthcare,  provided an essential platform for healthcare professionals to engage with the latest advances in robotic-assisted procedures, discuss emerging trends and understand the impact of cutting-edge technology on surgical outcomes.

It has been so exciting to be part of this symposium with a focus on Robotic Surgery. It has been a great day – a great opportunity to showcase developments in robotic surgery, as well as an opportunity to explore what comes next.

Ultimately, the one-day symposium provided a comprehensive platform for attendees to delve into the latest advancements in robotic assisted surgery, evidence-based practices, and the future trajectory of this rapidly evolving field. With a focus on innovation and practical application, symposium attendees were able to gain valuable insights into the future of robotic-assisted procedures and their impact on surgical outcomes.

This session provides an overview of robotic surgery, focusing on robotic colorectal surgery and innovations at NNUH. Led by Mo Iqbal and featuring Irshad Shaikh who’s a consultant colorectal surgeon at NNUH.

3. Discussing recent innovations in robotic surgery.

This session will also share insights into the advancements and successful outcomes of robotic colorectal procedures.

11:00 - 12:00 - Session 2: Development of an Oesophagogastric Robotic Service

Speaker – Nicholas Penney

This session will discuss the introduction of a new robotic oesophagogastric service at NNUH.

3. A case example from the first Robotic Assisted Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (RAMIO).

This session will cover the current landscape of soft tissue surgical robotics globally and in the UK. The challenges of adoption of robotics into mainstream practice. Consider some of the areas of ongoing research in robotics and how they may impact surgical care in the future.

Speakers – Siew-Ling Harrison and Thomas Maynard

Anaesthetic Considerations with regards to Robotic Surgery, with specific focus on the ergonomics of the room and the positioning of the patient. We will discuss nuances of the anaesthetic for different types of robotic surgery and the rationale behind it. Lastly, we will talk through potential emergency scenarios that may arise during robotic surgery, how we can best plan for this and manage it.

From Setup to Recovery: How Versius Surgical Robotic System is Transforming.

Overview: This session explores how Versius robot is transforming perioperative practice in colorectal surgery at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It highlights enhanced patient safety, drive surgical excellence through integrated teamwork & the use of the digital ecosystem. Sharing a world-first Versius combined pelvic case, Mr Heman Joshi will demonstrate the future of safe, accessible & sustainable robotic surgery.

1.Understand how Versius robotic surgery enhances patient safety, team communication and perioperative efficiency in colorectal procedures

2. Explore the structured training pathway for the theatre teams (VR, dry lab, preceptored cases) and the role of clinical registries in driving surgical excellence

An overview of the PA and SCP role in the robotic operating theatre, demonstrating the skills and training required to work in theatres. The presentation will also discuss our roles further, how these have developed over the years we have worked here, the variety of operations performed, interesting cases and opportunity for Q&As at the end.
